Local Sculptor Jim Demetro Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
Local sculptor Jim Demetro, creator of several of Puerto Vallarta's most iconic sculptures, was honored at a gathering in Puerto Vallarta on January 12, 2017, to recognize the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to him by the State of Washington. The rooftop celebratory dinner and reception was attended by more than 100 arts supporters in the area.
Demetro is a inspiration for mid-life career change! Growing up in a lower-income area of Chicago, he overcame the deaths of both parents and worked his way through college, becoming a successful process control engineer. His travels around the world as an engineer exposed him to beautiful art. His interest was sparked, and he became an accomplished amateur painter. In 1992, with the support of his wife Eva, he left his engineering career to pursue his dream to become a full-time, fine-arts sculptor,
Why bronze statuary? Demetro explains:
"I choose bronze as my media of expression because it has the exceptional qualities of high detail, flexibility, and longevity. Bronze art has withstood the test of time for thousands of years." — Jim Demetro.
Demetro, working closely with his daughter Christina, has created over 55 large public bronze sculptures which are exhibited around the world. His work is collected by celebrities such as Connie Stevens, Donald Sutherland, and Tom Cruise.
He is well-known for his lively and endearing sculptures of people, animals, and especially children.
One of Demetro's recent sculptures, Andale Bernardo, shows two boys trying to persuade a reluctant burro to proceed forward, one pushing and the other enticing with a carrot, while their pet dog tries to help! Demetro donated this sculpture to the city of Puerto Vallarta in 2014. Demetro intended for this sculpture to be interactive, and encourages children to climb on its back to have their pictures taken.
Another iconic Puerto Vallarta favorite is Demetro's sculpture Los Amantes, based on local favorites Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. The sculpture is pictured here with Demetro, his wife Eva and his daughter Christina.
While staying at Hacienda Alegra, enjoy the sculptures of Demetro and other artists which adorn the Puerto Vallarta beachfront and enliven the city's plazas and byways.
